Uninvited:

The 1963 Pitt Panthers

By David Finoli and Gary Kinn

Between the Jock Sutherland and Johnny Majors eras Pitt had one team who competed for a national championship, the 1963 squad.  The team went 8-1 and had a shot at going to a major bowl when President John F Kennedy was assassinated.  Their final game of the season against Penn State was delayed for a week in the aftermath and because of it the major bowls all passed on the Panthers, not wanting to take the chance Pitt would lose to their rivals.  They of course defeated the Nittany Lions in one of the most exciting games in the storied rivalry's history, but Pitt's season ended with them ranked third in the nation and uninvited to the bowls.  This is the story of that surprising season that no one saw coming.
